Dixie Hoedown on Krutz400 5-Star "Performer" Fiddle
Просмотров 364 года назад
Just doing a trial of some 5-string fiddles. Not fancy, and certainly not perfect fiddling.

I got a new 5-string fiddle yesterday. This is me trying it out. A 5-string feels a lot different than a standard 4-string. You have to change your bowing angle between strings as well as the way your mind thinks about where the notes are located. It certainly is not as easy as one might think!

Darling Nelly Gray, Fretless LeVan Banjo

I did this quick and dirty recording immediately after recording the same tune on a fretted banjo. Please excuse the unedited mistakes, as I made these videos for a friend, not for lots of folks to view!

A quick and dirty recording of "Darling Nellie Gray" (warts and all), played on a maple LeVan New Vintage banjo.
Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Clawhammer Style

I was just curious how close I could get to playing the actual notes in FMB while using only clawhammer style strokes. Here is what I came up with over about a half of an hour this afternoon. It is harder than it might appear!

This is my Levan New Vintage "Fretnaught" fretless banjo. I capped it up to A, and added a Regan 5th string capo at the A position, as well. Most people are under the impression that a capo doesn't work on a fretless banjo. Decide for yourself!

Sweet By and By 3-Finger Banjo

A quick, unedited take of this old tune played 3- finger style, to compare to clawhammer style on the same banjo.

A quick take, bobbles and all, of a simple clawhammer rendition of this old tune. Played on my new LeVan New Vintage banjo.

My brand new Levan "New Vintage" open back banjo. I received it a few minutes ago, pulled it out of the shipping case, tuned it, and recorded this video. I am new to clawhammer banjo playing, but not to banjos in general. This is a very impressive instrument.

Cherokee Shuffle On a New Yates Banjo
Have to say that's the best sounding Nechville I've ever heard barr none!
Whats that tune you're playing?
LOVE the archtop!!!!
Sounds lovely, I like that your doing it on an open back banjo. I like the Open Back Banjo Better because I love old time.
Wow, that thing rings all the way up the neck. I'm sorry that you had to sell your first born to buy it!
Wish you would add banjo info... what OME was that?
What song was they playing.love Hatfield banjos.
Nicely done! Is this the Bill Keith version that Tony Trishka has in his Collection of Fiddle Tunes for Banjo?
Which is flat and which is arch ?
Beautiful tune on a beautiful banjo thank you
The flathead obviously sounds better However i am an archtop fan and the 50-52 original gibson archtops sound the best. You have to have really good tension on those heads for those to really open up anything less than 91 is too weak.
How about telling us the brand of the banjo you are playing so we can compare?
Great job! love this song Thanks.
Sounds good, the fiddle and the fiddling!
Thanks, Peggy!
I would love to have the tab for this song. You did it great!
Hey Kenneth, I play by ear, so I don't have a tab. But, if you slow the video down to a playback speed of .25-.50, I bet you can figure it out just by listening and watching my fingers. Good luck!
Who made the fiddle?
Tommy Case, in Georgetown, KY.
Congrats on getting a new fiddle...sounds real nice. I guess it's a lot to get used to. Nice job fiddling on it too.
Sounds good Sam!
Thanks! I'm trying to convert from banjo to fiddle.
Oh Ya!
I liked the Prucha best closely followed by the TB-11. To me, the Yates sounded sweet but had a little less volume. The Pyramid was loud and crisp but a little bit harsh to me. Of course, everyone's taste in sound quality can be different.
Sounds great
Ah, what musical avarice and money won't buy. Rather, waste.
G. M. - After looking at your videos, I can see that you are a glass half full kind of guy. Clearly you are bored with your mundane life.
Hey there my friend! I know this is an old video, but it's the newest one from you that I've seen. I like the Prucha best, and then the Gibson-29, and then the Gibson TB-11. I think my Stelling would sound better than the Yates. You need to show your eyes, so we can make sure it's really you! Good pickin!!
Love that '29!
Flat gets my vote
Yates for me
Pyramid tone rings are great. Don't know why they never caught on in popularity.
Which tone ring option does the banjo have? Thanks!
Sorry I missed your question! It has the original scalloped brass tone ring that Mr. LeVan made for this banjo line.
I play bluegrass on my Recording King open back banjo all the time. It weighs about ten pounds less than my Huber!
I didn't like any of them probably because of the recording equipment.
Cool!
To me the OME and the Gibson had the medium brightness of tones. The Prucha was a little brighter... Heck,, they all sound great in their own little way.. Great comparison Sam Vallery. Would be interesting to see the price differences between them. Thanks
I think the 29 Gibson has the qualities of both the first two. They are all great sounding banjos, but impossible to say for sure which is best without playing them for yourself. Different hands pull different tone as well as different ears like different tones. Again, all great banjos.
Do you have the tab available?
No sir, I just play by ear, and it never comes out quite the same way two-times in a row.
I like the arch top ring, sounds just like my Gold Tone RG250F.
I should correct that, it's a BG250F
Sounds great Sam.
Hello can you post a video playing without the capo please open g or double c
I will when I get a chance. Not at my good desktop computer right now.
Yates has the 'pop, choke and sparkle'. Nice selection of high end banjos to choose from, very nice.
Prucha was best.
Trying to unlearn some bad habits on the 5-string by starting with the melody. Thanks for this.
Welcome. Good luck!
Need to gets me the arch top ring for my Nechville!
Sounding great Sam, nice and dry and tubby
#1 choice the Gibson TB11, followed by the Yates.
Like the man asked the chef-"This food is good ,What kind of pot did you use?".
what kind of head is that on the archtop
Sorry for the delayed reply. A standard Remo frosted head.
Wow i´ve never heard banjo with sweetly sound than Yates.
+Hoochie I dunno. I do like Deering and Bishline too. Yates does have a sweet banjo though.
YOU SHOULD BE STUDYING YOUR ENGLISH GRAMMAR, NAUGHTY BOY, & NOT COMMENTING IN BROKEN ENGLISH.
Deering notes are more pronounced crisp the others sound mushy to me.
yessir!
Great tunes, great banjo! Wish I could get my hands on an arch top rb5...
Great demonstration! Thanks!
Hey Sam,nice job.I just got a Stelling! See ya at Starvey?
Yep, I hope to be there! Stellings are awesome. I need to get another one, as I sold the one in this video.
